Education and Literacy Committee

The Education and Literacy Committee work is a part of our overall Rotary initiative.  As a Club, we realize that education and literacy are hugely important in North Minneapolis. We realize that our public schools are compromised and that many families in North Minneapolis are going else where for education for their children. We believe that the strength of our area lies partially in the strength of our educational options, and we believe that education begins at birth. Thus having an ongoing educational initiative is greatly important to our work.

Goals:
·      To promote Literacy and Education on the North Side of Minneapolis.
·       To make people aware that accelerating reading skills will create a better future for all.
·      To help parents understand that literacy begins at birth and that a love of reading and story telling will promote resilience and strength and a love of culture in the community.
·      To promote high quality educational options for all North Side residents.

Initiatives:
·      Sharing books with children through our own Little Free Libraries and book give-aways.
·      Dictionary sharing with the North Minneapolis Community and  for GED students and those enrolled in citizenship classes.
·      Promoting libraries as caring community centers and places to access homework help.
·      Stories of Peace and non-violence can be shared through this process and book events focusing on the goals of our club.
·      List of partners on literacy to promote culturally sensitive and more African American books.
